Description
Carbon monoxide is a toxic and flammable gas. It is odorless and colorless,
and a cryogenic liquid at -192°C. Pure carbon monoxide is corrosive
on metals at atmospheric pressures. Air containing 0.4 percent carbon
monoxide is fatal within one hour if inhaled.
Uses
Carbon monoxide is used for production of methanol and phosgene as
well as in organic synthesis. It is also used to when producing high
purity powdered metals such as zinc white pigments. It can also be
used when manufacturing acids, esters and hydroxy acids.
