Chemical Symbol: H2S
Synonyms: Sulfuretted hydrogen, hydrogen sulphide, hydrosulfuric acid
Description
Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless, flammable and toxic gas. It is slightly
heavier than air and reacts quickly with many metals. The gas is soluble
in water, alcohol, petroleum solvents and crude petroleum.
Uses
Hydrogen sulfide is used for purification of hydrochloric and sulfuric
acid, to precipitate sulfides of metals and to produce elemental sulfur
and organosulfur compounds. Furthermore, it is used to produce among
others pharmaceuticals, plastics, televisions, cathode ray tubes, fluorescent
tube phosphors, dyes, biodegradable pesticides, ethylene, nylon, soda
ash and sodium hydrosulfide. The gas can also be used in waste water
cleanup and groundwater restoration.
